Overview

The HONEYWELL 230163 is an upper thermostat designed for residential electric water heaters. It controls the upper heating element by sensing water temperature and cycling power to maintain the setpoint. This part follows the HLC-APCOM mounting style, making it a direct-fit replacement for compatible tank-style water heaters. Licensed plumbers and water heater service technicians are the primary installers. The thermostat is a critical safety and control component — it works in tandem with the lower thermostat and high-limit cutoff to protect the tank and deliver consistent hot water output. The 230163 is suited for residential electric storage-type water heaters where an HLC-APCOM style upper thermostat is specified. It is noted to fit AO Smith, State, and Lochinvar water heater models that use this thermostat form factor. This part is typically found in single-element and dual-element tank configurations where the upper thermostat governs priority heating at the top of the tank.
